Failure, Your New Best Friend*

April 1, 2015

"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." - Michael Jordan

So we have to try -and we have to have the courage to accept that we might fail 3, 5, 9 times to succeed once. But it is that once that we will remember and that will take us into the future of a more satisfying life.

Many people are afraid to start things because they feel if their endeavor fails, it is a reflection on them. No. Wisely invested time is never a failure, it is an education. Every time you fail, you are one step closer to success. And only by doing and being in action can you ever really have success.

As the great wise man, George Burns, once said: "I honestly think it is better to be a failure at something you love than to be a success at something you hate."

And it’s true isn’t it? We all know people who just hate their jobs –they were just successful enough to get the job and just successful enough to keep the job they thoroughly detest! Better to fail…..!

But seriously, what do we all want? We all want some form of success –a happy family, a satisfying profession, an Oscar plus a Grammy, Rule the World…. whatever it is.

How do we go about getting it? How do we get good at anything?

In school, we are given lessons, then homework, then exams. We try to apply a base of knowledge in a trial and error sort of way. And mostly we fail, on our way to success, if not an A+.

We have to try (and fail) in order to succeed! That’s why you have to expect, accept, and even look forward to, the failures that make your eventual success much better!

"It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you have failed by default."  J.K. Rowling

The greatest success is leading a meaningful life. We only get one each, what is it for, but to live it the best we can?

Having purpose is one of the keys to finding meaning in life. Finding that purpose is one of your life’s biggest tasks. Pursuing that task with passion, taking risks in giving it your best efforts –I believe that will give you the zest you may be missing.

And while you are thinking about the things that are worth pursuing, keep in mind people, not just things. Sure, the material things in life are important, but it’s our relationships that will be our ultimate successes, the ones that matter when all is said and done.

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." Confucius

So make failure your new best friend – doesn’t sound so odd now does it?

Until Next Time

Kellie
