What works and what you really need in at home treatments to fix crepey skin.

A few years ago I had crepey skin and was on a mission to find great at home cosmetic corrective treatments to help banish myself of this unnecessary evil. Besides, it was driving me batty!

To be honest, I never really believed any cream could improve the appearance of crepey skin. As a 20 year veteran Home Shopping Network and Shopping Channel show host I tired every product under the sun and became very jaded when it came to skin care. All products made promises but very few delivered. I had given up hope and decided nothing could or would work.

But I went to work. As I was in great need of minimizing the appearance of my crepey skin. I researched on-line, scoured cosmetic and medical journals.

I jumped in on multiple forums, asked questions, listened to you and read your coments. I have seen some of your posts criticizing existing skin care and cosmetic products, which make very specific claims, but lack the necessary ingredients needed to back the claims up. You ladies are so smart.

And I am here to tell you I have have found the right products and the the right ingredients to help fix crepey skin.

In this article, we will discuss the 3 Cosmetic Products You Need to Fix Crepey Skin.

We are talking over the counter cosmetics. Non prescription grade.

All right, assuming I have wet your whistle, let's now get down to business...

It is not a long list. In fact, it's only three easy to pick products formulated with simple yet effective ingredients some of which are scientifically shown to work.

Lets begin the top 3 Cosmetics You Need to Fix Crepey Skin are:

• 10% Alpha Hydroxy Acids • Body Scrubs • Moisturizers

1. Alpha Hydroxy Acid

Number 1 of my list of the Top 3 Products You Need to Fix Crepey Skin is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid, or AHA.

I have been testing many strengths and find 10% to deliver the greatest benefits. 10% is also the highest concentration the FDA recommends for safe, at home use. For higher concentrations, seek out medical professionals such as a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

What is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid?

An AHA is a chemical exfoliator. Now don’t be freaked out by the word “chemical”. The word chemical refers to ingredients other than “physical” such as a loofah or almond shells, that can be used to slough off the top layer of dead skin.

Our bodies have a natural ability to slough off dead skin but this ability diminishes as we age. I once heard an aesthetician remark that after the age of 45, it is possible to have about 8 weeks of dead skin sitting on the surface of our face! YUCK!!!!

A chemical exfoliator dissolves the glue that connects skin cells. This gluing material basically un-glues and old skin cells slip away. The fancy term for this un-gluing is Desquamation. The main reason I have chemical exfoliators listed as number 1 is that they go deeper than physical exfoliators. Which is also the reason why chemical exfoliators are used in dermatological peels and have powerful anti-aging effects.

And science tells us a chemical exfoliator with the right ingredients and a high enough percentage of Alpha Hydroxy Acids, stimulates collagen.

I have also heard that a chemical exfoliator may also boost collagen and elastin formation!

It’s your skin’s reaction to aggressive exfoliation and triggers collagen production to compensate the deficit created by exfoliation. Now you know why science claims exfoliation is an effective anti-aging strategy.

In a Korean study conducted at Chonnam University Research Institute of Medical Science and National University Medical School, published in Dermatologic Surgery, researchers concluded that glycolics (alpha hydroxy acid treatments) increased production of fibroblasts and collagen. Which, they concluded, could in fact be responsible for reversing photo-aging! How's that for great news! You can read the abstract of the article in the United States National Library of Medicine/National Institute of Health here!

Next, check out the scientific research conducted on AHA’s and their impact on wrinkles and sagging skin as reported in the the Journal of Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology,

[2]Science has proved its effectiveness in reducing wrinkles and sagging of skin. AHA has great penetrating power so it’s fast acting and outcome is immense. Especially when combined with vitamins A, C and E as these anti-oxidants are known to boost collagen production. You can read an abstract of the report here.

Sounds better than promising, doesn't it? Solid science backed research.

So, in a nutshell, 10% AHA's:

• Exfoliates dead cells revealing younger looking skin • Erases fine lines and wrinkling

• Can minimize the appearance of crepey skin

• Softens your skin • Smoothens your skin • Makes skin radiant and glowing

• Can increase production of fibroblast proliferation and collagen

• May be responsible for reversal of photo aging

Next step, what ingredients you should check while buying a chemical exfoliator? Well, obviously, any type of AHA including:

• Glycolic Acid • Pyruvic acid • Lactic Acid • Mandaic Acid • Citric Acid • Malic Acid

As AHA's can be drying and tingle, I prefer my AHA's bundled with hydrating and moisturizing agents such as skin loving Safflower Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, Glycerine, Squalene or Shea Butter.

Majority of 10% AHA products have buffering agents to take away some of that sting. Remember, we are talking about strong fruit acids here. Why not have some soothing, moisturizing and anti-aging goodies tag along as well?

Also, the FDA has conducted studies that support cosmetic cream base containing AHA's cause the AHA's to penetrate more deeply than liquid based AHA formulation. Hey, who am I to argue with the FDA?

You can unlock the exfoliating and collagen boosting treasures of AHA’s by applying to your skin once to twice per day.

Based on all this information, I created an entire line of skin care called ReNuture - Crepey Skin FX Corrective Beauty Treatments with 10% glycolic acid. To learn more about these beauty treatments, click here.

AHA SUN ALERT: As you are revealing fresh, new, young skin, always use a sunscreen when embarking on any AHA treatments.

So, where are we now? We have spoken about 10% AHA's (chemical exfoliator) now lets talk about number 2 on my list of the top 3 cosmetics you need to fix crepey skin: physical exfoliators.

2. Physical Exfoliators

A physical exfoliator is a scrub.

A more technical definition is: any abrasive material such as a loofah sponge, dry brush, almond shells or sugar granules which can slough away the flecks of dry skin to expose young skin underneath. Heck, even a rough towel can be considered a physical exfoliator! All of these things work to improve skin health.

Besides exfoliating to reveal smooth skin, a good scrub feels really good on your body! Physical exfoliating is the best part of my bath! Why? Because it feels soooooo good!

Additional benefits include:

• Smoothes your skin

• Reveals younger skin

• Gets rid of old dry skin cells

• Any additional products you use gets to the newer skin that is revealed

• Brightens your skin tone

• Gets rid of dandruff in your panty-hose during winter months

What to look for while buying a physical exfoliator? Here's a list of several ingredients to check before taking an exfoliator home. All these ingredients WORK!

• Natural Sea Sponge/Loofah Sponge Sugar • Almond • Shells • Amber

• Fruit enzymes

• Moisturizing agent including shea butter, squalene, hyaluronic acid or mineral oil.

Apply an exfoliator containing these ingredients on your skin once a day and get rid of dead skin!

Always use a sunscreen when embarking on any AHA treatments. 3. Moisturizer

The third product I have included as part of the 3 products you need to fix crepey skin is Moisture. Yes, so simple yet so important! Here’s the deal: Any moisturizer will get rid of the appearance of crepey skin for the short term. The moisture from the moisturizer is hydrating and plumping up the DEAD DRY TOP LAYER OF SKIN that enhances the appearance of creepiness. A moisturizer will not get rid of saggy, crepey skin on it's own. A moisturizer will however provide your skin the nutrients it needs for staying healthy. I believe in moisturizing your skin, crepey skin or not. Dry and starved skin speeds up aging, leading to wrinkles and crepey appearance. So, keep a moisturizer with you and use it after bathing, in cold weather and especially after removing dead skin (it supports maximum results). Your skin will glow, you will look younger and your body will look fantastic! How it works: Along with hydration ability, many are loaded with nutrients and anti-aging elements. They penetrate in your skin and moisturize it. Many support firm, youthful looking skin. A moisturizer:

• Hydrates and rejuvenates your skin • Reduces appearance of wrinkles and crepey skin • Supports sun damaged skin • Keeps it radiant

Important ingredients to look for in a moisturizer: I recommend some of these ingredients be present in the moisturizer you are going to buy for yourself. They ensure safe and fast results!

• Kernel oil (extracted from the seed of the Palm)

• Avocado Oil

• Safflower Seed Oil

• Glycerin

• Lavender

• Flaxseed seed oil

• Cocos Nucifera (coconut) oil

• Honey

• Vitamin D

• Vitamins ACE

• Amaranthus Caudatus seed extract

• Shea butter

• Ceramides

• Macadamia ternifolia seed oil So, there you have it: 3 cosmetic products you need to fix crepey skin.

Exfoliation and Moisture are the keys to success.

Physical exfoliation including loofah sponge, dry brush or sugar scrubs with naturally occurring AHA's are some of your best bets.

You now know chemical exfoliation using AHA's with maximum 10% AHA can actually trigger collagen and is perfect for safe home use. Better yet, find a 10% AHA that has been blended up with super moisturizing/hydrating ingredients such as Safflower seed oil, glycerine, shea butter, Jojoba Oil, Avocado Oil and you are looking at Oscar Award winning proportions.

Remember what I said above about the FDA doing studies on cream based AHA's? Creams go deeper!

And all 3 products are affordable and you can DIY and start getting rid of the visible signs of aging including crepey skin, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and dark spots in the comfort of your own home.

See? Really simple products that can give you results with science backing it up.
