Winter arrives one of two ways: in like a lion and out like a lamb, or, as in the winter of 2016, in like an embryo and out like a stampede of elephants! Nothing is bleaker than a cold winter’s day.

 

 

And for the majority of us, the shorter days and colder nights can get us down. And comfort food to the rescue! But they aren’t always the right food to cure our winter blues, are they? Most of them just leave us feeling heavy and drowsy. So if winter blues got you down, 7 Natural Foods That Get You Smiling will be the perk that picks you up!

 


Let the winter blues natural food feasting begin!

 
1. Fruits – Specifically apples, bananas, and oranges.

These fruits will get you smiling!

Why? Because these fruits are naturally high in fiber and contain their own natural sweet appeal! Fiber keeps you regular and the natural sugar gives you that little pick me up that only a natural sugar can provide. Plus, apples are high in the fiber department and will feed you with steady energy plus keep you from feeling lazy.  

 

As for bananas, aside from potassium, bananas will give you magnesium that causes enhanced sleep quality and lowers anxiety levels in the body.

 

Same goes with oranges. You get increase in energy and the Vitamin C you get from the fruit also drops anxiety which in turn prevents chances of winter blues.

 2. Berries – For a quick fix, grab some berries.

Stock up on strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries during winter season. Not only are they healthy fruits to snack on but they contain antioxidants and antochyanins, both of which are know to be cortisol busting agents. In effect, berries control or temper many of the ups and downs that transpire in the body in reaction to stress.  And long cold winter days cand be tiresome and stressful.

 

3. Dark Chocolate – It’s usually the first thing to

hit your mouth when you are down. But to battle winter blues, not just any chocolate candy will do. It needs to be dark chocolate and  have 70% cocoa content for it to be effective. It contains the neurotransmitter Serotonin which regulates mood.

 

Low levels of this in the brain have been found to promote depression. Just a food for thought though: dark chocolate is high in calories so you may want to ingest a small portion at a time.  Good luck on that one!!  lol

 
4. Walnuts – They contain really high Omega-3 fatty acids that prevent symptoms of depression. Walnuts are one of the brain super foods that you should consider snacking on because it promotes the overall health of the brain.

 5. Fatty Fish – Not so nuts about walnuts? Get you

dose of Omega-3 fatty acids from fatty fish like Bluefish, Mackerel, Salmon, and Tuna. You get the boost to your brain health but in general, these fishes are very much good for your overall health. Not only will they aid in fighting winter blues, but they improve circulation, lessen inflammation, and minimize the threat of heart disease.

 


 6. Whole Grains – We’ve talked about high fiber in apples. Same thing goes with whole grains. They are healthy for the body and the complex carbohydrates you get from them can improve moods swiftly.

 7. Green Tea – Power packed with antioxidants

and also a depression fighter… How cool is that? This is because green tea contains an amino acid called Theanine that gives tea drinkers an relaxed and stress-free benefit.
