Kick It Old School: Retro Workouts to Make You Sweat*

February 8, 2017

Zumba, Spinning, CrossFit, oh my! So many workouts, so little time. It seems as though a new exercise routine comes out every year, each one more trendy and extreme than the last.

If your personal development goals involve getting in shape to help you stay young, it can be helpful to switch up your regimen every so often. Why not try out some of the tried and true workouts of years past? Break out of your exercise rut and find new inspiration in some old reliables.

Hula Hooping

When it comes to the 1950s exercise craze of hula hooping, retro really means retro! This full-body workout is thought to have originated thousands of years ago in Greece and Egypt. It works as well today as it surely did way back then. In fact, the American Council on Exercise has found that this fun activity burns more than 400 calories per hour.

Pilates

You may remember when Pilates – a yoga-esque workout focusing on core strength, flexibility, and mental enhancement – rose to popularity in the 1990s and early 2000s. Did you know this intense training regimen actually came to America in the 1940s, brought by its inventor, Joseph Pilates? It may not rank on the list of top workouts these days, but Pilates is still a solid choice to
add to your regimen.

Richard Simmons Cardio

Millennials may not have fond memories of Sweatin’ to the Oldies, but their parents probably do! This classic dance cardio workout may be a little corny, but it does the job of burning plenty of calories. The fun, casual, judgement-free feel is sure to inspire you in your efforts to get healthy and lose weight.

Buns of Steel

Who could forget the original inspiration for those oh-so-trendy built-up booties? Sure, we mercilessly mocked the name of this butt, thigh, and leg workout but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work! This ‘80s classic will have you sweating off the calories in no time.

Are you ready to shed some pounds and feel younger than ever? Whether you try out one of these fun, invigorating retro workouts, or work some HIIT into your busy schedule, getting in shape is one of the best anti-aging techniques you can use.

You may not want to bring those leg warmers and neon spandex workout clothes back out, but you’ll definitely have fun and lose weight too if you try one (or more!) of these throwback workouts!
