Aging & the Mid-Life Crisis: How to Find Purpose and Get Back on Track*

March 22, 2017

Sure, we joke around about the stereotypical middle-aged man with the red sports car which surely signifies a personal crisis. The truth is that many people – both men and women – go through a period of time when they question their life’s purpose and path. In fact, research shows that the early 40s often bring a dip in happiness.

This lull in your sense of fulfillment may come from a marital crisis, concern over whether you’ve chosen the right career, or simply coming face to face with your own mortality and wondering if you’ve reached your full potential personally or professionally.

If you feel paralyzed by a sense that you may be missing out on the true meaning of life, don’t fret. The good news is that experts say that happiness picks back up after this temporary midlife lull. In the meantime, however, you’re probably wondering how to navigate these unfamiliar waters. Here are some tips for dealing with a midlife crisis, and not just surviving, but coming out the other side even better than ever!

Don’t Go It Alone!

One of the best ways to cope when you’re feeling a little lost during this time period is by calling upon the support of close friends and family. Particularly if you know someone who’s been down this road before, don’t be embarrassed to reach out and ask them to listen. They don’t need to solve your problems – just having someone to bounce your thoughts off can provide you with much needed clarity.

Think Positive

It seems cliché, but it’s really true – you can create your own manifest destiny simply by looking at your crisis from a different perspective. Remember – this too shall pass. You won’t feel this way forever, and in fact going through a period of self-evaluation and reflection can actually make your future even better!

Focus on Your Strengths

When you’re embroiled in the battle to fight aging and stay young, a midlife crisis can seem like just another reminder of the things that change as you get older. Shift your focus, instead, to your talents and strengths. A good way to do this is to make a written list, perhaps in your journal, of things that make you amazing. You have so much to offer the world – and yourself – don’t lose sight of that!

Any time you start to question the purpose of your existence, it can be a traumatizing experience. If you use those thoughts to advance and enhance your personal development, you can become a better version of yourself. And after all, isn’t that what we’re all trying to do on our anti-aging journey?

Until Next Time,
