Is Stress Aging You? Self-care Helps You Stay Young!*

April 17, 2017

You probably already know that chronic stress is no friend of your body – I mean, that’s a no-brainer! But did you know that research shows that stress can actually damage your cells, sabotaging your anti-aging efforts??

That’s right – all that worry over your job, kids, and everything you need to get done on a daily basis (and it’s a lot, right?) – is a big contributor to what ages you. This means if you don’t find a way to fight stress and take care of you, wrinkles, crepey skin, and other unpleasant side effects of growing older may creep up on you faster than you’d like!

So what can you do to fight – and even reverse – these nasty effects of aging? Self-care is on the top of that list, and I recently interviewed beauty and anti-aging guru Kellie Olver to give you some great tips on how to reduce stress and pamper yourself!

Get Your Beauty Sleep!
Rest is so important – it allows your cells to recover from the damage of the day (which helps prevent wrinkles!) and gives your brain a reset from all the information it must process in daily life. Seven to eight hours is ideal – don’t skimp on this, especially when you are under extra pressure!

Make Time for Hobbies
Your passions and interests are a vital part of who you are, yet we often allow time for these things to get crowded out by more pressing matters. Try to make at least an hour a week to engage in your favorite activity – gardening, playing an instrument, reading, whatever feeds your creative side (we all have one!).

Silence Is Golden
You don’t have to be the praying type to take some time out to reconnect with yourself in a quiet space. Meditate, do yoga, or simply sit with your eyes closed for a few minutes and allow your brain to slow down. Even a short break from your urgent tasks can boost your productivity and lower your overall stress level.

Connect With Nature
There’s nothing quite like lying on the beach, listening to the soothing sound of waves rolling up on the cool sand, and staring up at the endless blue sky. Getting in touch with nature’s incredible gifts is the perfect way to encourage stress to flow right out of your body. Take a walk in the woods, catch snowflakes on your tongue, there are so many ways to take advantage of this free stress relief!

I know firsthand how busy and chaotic life gets – just remember, you can’t take good care of everyone else if you don’t take care of yourself first! A healthy mind builds a healthy – and young – body!
