Hyaluronic Acid Benefits Your Skin and Face

August 16, 2018

I first learned about hyaluronic acid back in the 80’s. It was and still is the core ingredient in Night Repair, an intensive night time treatment serum for the face and one of Estee Lauder’s hero products. That was over 30 years ago and yet even today, both hyaluronic acid and Night Repair are going strong. Why? Because of all the benefits hyaluronic acid delivers to the skin, namely being one of the best moisturizing agent and youth restorer there is.

What is hyaluronic acid? First, it is completely natural. We all have hyaluronic acid throughout our bodies. It is a molecule that helps the skin and joints to keep moisture in and stay flexible and lubricated. And it does this with a very special ability to retain moisture. In fact, hyaluronic acid can retain hundreds of times its weight in water.

Studies have shown that skin aging is closely related to both collagen degradation and the loss of skin moisture, hyaluronic acids specialty. And there in lies a problem. Hyaluronic acid degrades very quickly – lasting less than a few minutes in the blood and less than one day in the skin. And in fact, the most clear clinical marker of older skin is the (eventually complete) disappearance of hyaluronic acid in the epidermis layer.

So, to retain the appearance of younger skin which including plumpness, perkiness and a firm to the feel touch, application of hyaluronic acid to the face and body is essential. And the good news is hyaluronic acid works both from within and from without.

Hyaluronic acid plumps moisture into fine lines and wrinkles on your face and other surface areas of your body leaving you with a smoother, younger looking skin. While at the same time it also can go deep by adding lost moisture deep from within.

But there is a problem which slowed down the use of this substance in skin treatments.

Hyaluronic acid is naturally of a high molecular weight (lots of atoms per molecule), but a lower weight is what the skin needs in a topical treatment. The reason is simple – to penetrate the skin externally requires a smaller molecule:

Good news! Science has solved the problem and has invented ways to reduce the molecular weight of hyaluronic acid used in skin treatments. This produces a truly effective skin hydration system, although note, it does not replace the skin’s natural hyaluronic acid – it can’t penetrate that far.

How to get best results of applying hyaluronic acid topically to the skin?

You need to use a serum or cream (infused with hyaluronic acid) regularly to get the visible benefits you are looking for.

Some people swear by hyaluronic supplements in a pill or liquid form.

But be assured, hyaluronic acid treatments really do work – just try different brands and use them in small amounts first to make sure your skin does not overreact.

Til Next Time,
